Nuclear Engineering and Design Overview

MLEA Inc. provides consulting services to the nuclear industry. In recent years, MLEA Inc. engineers have been heavily involved in technical services related to extended power up-rate projects and related activities and licensing submittals. MLEA Inc. has also provided design and engineering support to nuclear plants related to various plant modernization and improvement projects.

MLEA Inc. provided technical support to the USNRC in the 1990s through support of NRC-initiated (both headquarters and regional) safety system functional inspections (SSFIs) at several nuclear facilities, such as Browns Ferry, Millstone and Perry. In addition to inspection support, various MLEA Inc. personnel have direct experience in preparing technical evaluation reports (TERs) for the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR). This work included review and evaluation of licensee submittals related to generic issues being resolved by NRR in the 1980s, such as containment leakage testing (10CFR50, Appendix J), electric equipment qualification, boron dilution events, and main-steam-line breaks with continuing feed water addition. The FRC technical evaluation reports were subsequently provided to the NRC for inclusion in NRC safety evaluation reports (SERs).

MLEA Inc. EPU activities have involved calculations and analyses, transient analyses, procedural updates, and test plan preparations. MLEA Inc. personnel prepared sections of the power-uprate safety analysis reports (PUSAR) and other licensing submittals. This work also included interface and direct dialog with the USNRC staff, including formal responses to NRC requests for information (RAI). Through this recent, active involvement in NRC licensing activities, MLEA Inc. personnel are completely familiar and up to date with NRC regulations, regulatory guides and standard review plans.
